Picton is a part of the parish of Kirk Leavington the principal object of interest in which is the Castle Hill, an abrupt circular mound near Middleton Mill. It is of artificial construction, and is variously attributed to the Ancient Britons and the Saxons. Appleton-upon-Wisk, about three miles to the south-west of the station, is famous as the supposed birthplace of Rymer, the author of " Fcedera," a valuable collection of records, published in London about the year 1700. Yarm is an ancient market town, about six miles south-west of Middlesbrough. It is built on a low peninsula, which is surrounded by the Tees on three sides, and is liable to frequent inundations. The railway is carried over the river by a viaduct, 780 yards in length and consisting of forty-three arches of red brick with stone dressings, the two which cross the river being formed entirely of stone. The town is a very old one, called in the Domesday Book, Varum, and by Dugdale, J arum; it consists mainly of a long and broad street, running north and south. Its Parish Church, rebuilt in 1730, is dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, and is a plain unpretentious edifice, standing on the bank of the Tees; and there are numerous other places of worship in the town, a covered Market Place, with the Town Hall over, standing in the centre of the chief street.
